19th Century American Literature
This up-to-four-page essay is an out-of-class project. We're experimenting with having no minimum limit, only the max at 4. Write on one text. Plan for only two body paragraphs. Choose from the set of topics below or propose one of your own about the nature of American literature. You make choose any work that we will cover this semester. If you're interested in exploring other possibilities than Hawthorne, Gilman and Twain, look at the list of course texts in the Honors Document folder all are there except Stein's text, which is still under copyright, so you'll need to see me for the copy.
Each body paragraph will require a minimum of three quotations from the text properly embedded and properly cited according to MLA citation. Construct a logical line of argument from thesis to topic sentences and use close analysis of text to prove your argument.
The writing process —drafting, re-drafting and editing—is what comprises your Writing Workshop grade, separate from your paper grade. It has three parts, all of which are time-sensitive grades: 1 the thesis and topic sentences.
You'll submit them on a set due date, then resubmit revisions of them until you have developed a strong, well-written line of argument. You will need to keep resubmitting them as soon as I return them to you until you have a final check.
If you don't have that final check by the Friday before the first draft is due , the grade will begin accumulating late penalties. The grade will convert to zero after the Friday of the week in which we edit the first draft in class; 2 first draft of two pages minimum. If you're absent to class or don't have your draft, you need to get the essay edited according to the edit sheet 1 guidelines and then show it to me personally.
Until you do, your Writing Workshop grade receives late penalties. If you haven't shown it to me by the Friday before the second draft is due, the grade converts to a zero; 3 second draft at least three pages. The marginal point of view. Hawthorne opens his novel announcing the portal into which he's inviting the reader--one which issues from the prison door moves to the pillory and then outward to a cabin on the periphery of the Boston settlement.
This eccentric point of view enables Hawthorne to view the Puritan construct from a woman's, an outsider's, a social outcast's point of view. How does this outsider's point of view serve Hawthorne? Of what does the outside view consist? How does the feminiziation of the outside view aid Hawthorne in his critique of the "iron men" who are the Puritans? What is Hawthorne saying about nineteenth-century society as he projects its concerns onto the sixteenth century?
Hester's Free Thinking. Hawthorne creates in Hester a figure of considerable intellectual and moral depth and independence. Yet he also often falls into patriarchal thinking as he projects gendered prejudices onto Hester. Explore Hester as an independent thinker. In what way is she Hawthorne's vision of the Romantic artist standing alone against constraining society?
Be sure to include in your analysis the tension between Hawthorne's portrait of Hester as a free thinker and his confinement of her in the domestic mode of identity as helper and nurturer. Claire P, Kendall N. The Puritan construct. Hawthorne paints a harsh image of the Puritans, one that is suspect in its monolithic nature it lumps them all together as if all alike.
It's more likely historically that the Puritans who were in charge of the society--ministers and governors--were spiritual totalitarians, but that the larger society consisted of a whole range of ways to live. Speculate as to why a nineteenth-century Romantic would want to construct a totalitarian society for his fictional society. How does the constraint of that society help in mark out a space for resistance that stands in greater relief?
Where in Hawthorne's depiction of this society does he include alternative modes of life? Katie B. Projection onto nature.
As a writer who identified with the Romantic movement, Hawthorne recognized the power of nature as a space on which to construct his ideas of human freedom. Examine the nature scenes in the novel and speculate on what kind of image Hawthorne creates of it. If he poses it against the constraint of society, does he present as a viable alternative a life lived naturally? This exploration will likely take you into an examination of his depiction of Native people.
Nature is also a space that Hawthorne largely feminizes. Develop a theory as to what he constructs of nature and what function it serves in addressing one of the themes of the novel especially freedom versus constraint. Mary S. Topic closed. The Floating Signifier. Hawthorne spends a good deal of space in the novel pointing to places where the signifier comes unmoored from the signified the object it's supposed to point toward.
Choose either Pearl or the Scarlet Letter as the floating signifier though you may propose a different character or object for your analysis and write a paper exploring the primary ways in which that signifier operates to produce meaning in the novel. You may decide to examine first its initial signification and then its unmooring from the signified.
Chillingworth's Homosocial Interest in Dimmesdale. Within the patriarchal economy, the wronged husband is less interested in the cheating wife than in the man who interloped on their relationship. Hawthorne shows Chillingworth's interest in Arthur as bordering on the erotic as he pursues him courts him?
When Chillingworth reaches the summit of his quest for uncovering Dimmesdale's secret, he doesn't stop his quest, but continues to follow Arthur. Write a paper which theorizes the nature of this relationship. You may concentrate solely on Chillingworth or you may choose to look at the relationship from both his and Dimmesdale's views. Dickinson's Explorations of Poetry. Choose one of Dickinson poems and focus on her self-reflexive focus on the function of poetry or the manner in which poetry is created out of reality.
Alexis M. Dickinson's Reflections on Conventionality. Choose one of Dickinson poems and explore how she deconstructs conventional thinking. How does she keep from merely erecting an alternative to conventional thinking? Focus on her techniques for deconstructing the binary system, and show how she keeps the idea open rather than closing it down into her own separate meaning.

Madness as a liberation. Most metaphors of madness treat it as a sort of descent into incapacity, almost a descent into the loss of one's very humanity. Gilman represents the real world as it's lived by women in the nineteenth century under the seemingly benign totalitarianism of patriarchy as a sort of nightmare.
She restricts her point of view to a woman who has been conditioned by internalized sexism to believe that her husband's thinking is more reliable than her own. Because this woman is also highly intelligent and imaginative, her mind must occupy itself in some active pursuit, even while she is confined to her room supposedly for her own good.
In this physical world of confinement, endorsed initially by the narrator's own mental confinement, Gilman opens the space of liberation exactly where one doesn't expect it--in the realm of madness. Write an essay analyzing Gilman's use of madness as a space of liberation rather than as a space of confinement or debility. Release from identification with the Oppressor. In any system of oppression, the oppressed person is conditioned to identify with the oppressor.
In that way, the oppressor doesn't have to exert continual control over him or her, but can just let the oppressed person control her- or himself.

National literature takes time to develop; it is not a stable concept. Its place in the world system fluctuates, which means that national literature will go through varying degrees of unequal exchange. Eliot diverges from the purely economic concept by permitting unequal exchange to flow both ways depending on the situation. American literature is one such example; as its tradition changes, its position in the literary system is altered. The term literature can be defined as creative and artistic writings that can be found in books, poetry, novels, and other works that contain value and recognition. English colonists and voyagers are the key foundation of American writing in the colonial period. For example, voyagers such as Captain John Smith would keep a journal to record daily events of his surroundings and discoveries. This literary principle was based on a group of originalities in faith, culture, and approach. The Romantics tended to worth emotion and instinct over reason and reasoning. A number of the authors of the nineteenth century placed themselves into one or the other classification. Don't use plagiarized sources. In its most particular usage transcendentalism refers to a literary and philosophical motion that developed in America in the very first half of the 19th century. It first arose amongst the liberal New England Congregationalists who departed from the orthodox Calvinists, whose approach to Christian life stresses the guideline of God over all things.
