Dissertation Program

The MSc programme in Bioinformatics at Wageningen University provides students with a BSc in Life Sciences or Computer Sciences with skills necessary to manipulate large biological datasets, the ability to analyze these data and the ability to develop new bioinformatics tools.

At Wageningen the Bioinformatics programme focuses on the practical application of Bioinformatics. Depending on previous BSc degree, candidates are requested to follow supplementary introduction courses. Students with BSc in Computer Science follow courses in molecular biology and students with BSc in Life Science courses on programming and computer science. The curriculum commences with training in programming, data science and elementary bioinformatics tools aimed at using existing software to collect, analyze and interpret DNA and protein sequence information and moves on to more open challenges.

Afterwards students follow Molecular Systems Biology. Advanced bioinformatics courses deal with structural and functional genomics, transcriptomics and DNA array technology data, as well as algorithm development and machine learning. Alternatively, students can focus on systems biology.

Depending on the student's skills and interest advanced courses in 3D protein modelling, genome annotation, data science or in software design can be taken.

The last part of the programme consists of a Bioinformatics thesis period of 6 months. Typical thesis projects include genome annotation, design and testing of mutant proteins, and development of new algorithms to facilitate protein domain recognition.

The duration of the MSc Bioinformatics programme is 24 months. The programme commences annually in September. The curriculum includes courses on advanced programming and data science, but there are also optional courses in basic programming and statistics etc available.

Details are found in the study handbook. The Study handbook contains detailed information about curricula and courses offered by Wageningen University. Back to MSc Bioinformatics. The software manipulates sequence data to infer the history of the sequences, and the main part the engine doing the calculations is described in all details in a dissertation and two subsequent publications. Regression tests are available, and the current Perl code is well-documented as far as the engine is concerned. You will have access to state-of-the-art computing infrastructure.

DISSERTATION

Only those pursuing their master's degree are accepted for such dissertation or project work. In case of candidates pursing integrated M. Number of students taken each year may vary depending upon availability of the supervisor. Preference will be given to the candidates devoting their full time for the dissertation or project during this study period. Requests for shorter period projects shall not be considered. Students are requested to follow the prescribed procedure for admission and NOT to approach individual scientists for placement for the project. The shared limited accommodation facility is available at the institute's guest house on charge basis. The outside female students will be given the preference on accommodation facility. However, accommodation shall be provided based on availability. The list of selected candidates shall be displayed on institute's website www.

As the rate of biological data generation continues to outstrip the rate at which life scientists are able to analyse and add meaning to these data, there is an increasing expectation for an ever more diverse group of life scientists to gain such analytical skills.

Now as some of you may be entering into the final year of your studies. You must be planning for dissertation topics and institutes where you can apply. Doing a dissertation at an external institute is always beneficial as it will help you in network building. Moreover, you will get a chance to work with the top guns in the Life Sciences field.

I am a master student that I am in first semester. Now, My thesis hasn't been determined yet. Im gonna work on bioinformatics topic. But My advisor told me that your thesis may be about graphical user interface of specific bioinformatics tool. This tool, which just works on Linux command line, had been made by someone. So, I will just try to develop GUI of it. So, this topic is related with bioinformatics? Because I have doubts. Thanks in advance. Developing a GUI for an existing tool is a pure software project. That probably can't even be used for a comp sci thesis let alone bioinformatics. Bio is a big part of the word bioinformatics. It's best if your thesis will directly address some biological challenges.
