Soooo homework. After a dozen years of teaching here is my philosophy on homework. But what does the research say? His findings? Well, apparently homework in the elementary grades does little to help student achievement. The emphasis is on practicing vowel sounds, but there are also some consonant skills. Topics cover addition, subtraction 1 and 2-step problems , comparisons, multiplication, division, money, and writing their own story problems.

Well, using larger numbers helps students solidify their base understanding. Also, in a problem solving format, students are more likely to solve it in a way that makes sense rather than following meaningless steps. Students get a chance to practice tally charts, bar graphs, pictographs, line graphs, data tables, and line plots. I really enjoyed making some up for these homework pages. I think they look great and I love the idea of the math on one side and language arts on the other. Just wondering about the time management of it all. Also, what do you use for bell work for the students as they start their day. The kids keep the same story for a week, so I only get it on Fridays. Then I just record their highest words correct per minute rate the parents have already filled it in.
