Soooo homework. After a dozen years of teaching here is my philosophy on homework. But what does the research say? His findings? Well, apparently homework in the elementary grades does little to help student achievement. The emphasis is on practicing vowel sounds, but there are also some consonant skills. The sequence of phonics skills aligns with our morning work book practice.
Covering topics from the common core like contractions, plurals, past tense, etc. I also toss in some sight word review if it will fit on the page.
This strand is pretty eclectic. Sometimes they learn new words using a modified Frayer model graphic organizer.
These 5 language art strands cycle through every 5 days of the homework. Place Value. This is huge in the 2 nd grade common core for a reason. A firm understanding of our base system and how to use it to understand and solve problems is essential for more complex mathematics. In the homework pages, the sequence of these skills follows the outline from Singapore math and the Learning Trajectories.
Are you familiar with the Trajectories? A fabulous book! Anyway, the place value pages build on those ideas. Working with ones and tens, making numbers with hundreds, and using place value patterns to problem solve. I debated this for a while. I used to have problems like that. It says nothing about using the algorithm. And while the algorithm step-by-step adding the ones , regrouping a ten if necessary, adding the tens, etc.
They just wanted to follow the steps and be done. These are sums to 20 that students should know automatically. The idea is for students to:. Each problem solving page has 3 problems and plenty of work room. Topics cover addition, subtraction 1 and 2-step problems , comparisons, multiplication, division, money, and writing their own story problems.
Well, using larger numbers helps students solidify their base understanding. Also, in a problem solving format, students are more likely to solve it in a way that makes sense rather than following meaningless steps. Students get a chance to practice tally charts, bar graphs, pictographs, line graphs, data tables, and line plots. I really enjoyed making some up for these homework pages. You should then see day 1 literacy on one side and day 1 math on the back. I hope you find this as useful in your 2nd grade as my team does!

I just have to say that as a parent I think homework is wrong especially for younger grades. My kids are in school for 7 hours.

Great job Heidi and Emily. Just twenty minutes a day helps students retain. Research shows students lose an average of two months, yes two months knowledge from previous year over the summer months. Your packet looks great. Are the reading comprehension pages separate or included in the common core packet for sale? This is for only days what do you use after that. Hi Sandy! Sorry, yes I was referring to the fluency passages. How do you handle returning the homework. I did the 1 minute math pages and spelling and the checking of it was so time consuming. Do you take these home nightly to check?
I think they look great and I love the idea of the math on one side and language arts on the other. Just wondering about the time management of it all. Also, what do you use for bell work for the students as they start their day. The kids keep the same story for a week, so I only get it on Fridays. Then I just record their highest words correct per minute rate the parents have already filled it in.

Originally you had said your morning work took 10 — 15 minutes. Would you say that is still about right, by writing spelling words and drawing it looks like it may take longer. Thanks Sandy! However, I do like the philosophy of 10 minutes per grade. My children have four hours until bedtime once they hop off the bus.
