The contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12 in public, private, parochial schools, or those who are home schooled. The topic is Christopher Columbus in his own time, in history and today. Students were asked to describe Christopher Columbus as he was understood in three different time periods: What did 15th century people think about his accomplishments? How did 19th century historians view him? How did Columbus, who had primitive ships and no computers or modern navigation equipment, affect our lives today? The American History Essay Contest is open to students in grade 5, 6, 7 and 8 in public, private, or parochial school, or those who are home schooled.

At their February meeting, the members of the Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented awards to area grade school and high school students. This year's American History Essay was "Young American takes a Stand: The War of " The students were asked to pretend they were alive during the War of and had a friend who has become famous in history because of standing up for America during that exciting and dangerous time. They were to describe the person and how he or she stood up for America. In addition, they were to explain why it is important to honor such heroes when we celebrate the th anniversary of the War of Anna Avampato, Carmel Catholic High School was unable to attend and received her award at a later date. The students selected as the school's DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of Dependability, which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality; Service, which includes cooperation, courtesy and consideration for others; Leadership, which includes personality, self-control and ability to assume responsibility; and Patriotism, which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation, to an outstanding degree. This is the first year that the Michael Burja Memorial Scholarship has been awarded. This Scholarship is presented to a student enrolled in college who is majoring in special education and currently works with special-needs children at Laremont School.

The American History Essay Contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about our nation's great history and learn about history in a new light.
