Despite being set in Seattle, Washington, its young characters attend Padua High, perhaps the modern equivalent for a small city. The movie is about a father terrified of his daughters sexuality and certain that they would be unable to take care of themselves. His eldest, Kat, is loud-mouthed, independent, and angry at the state of the world. His youngest, Bianca, is pretty, popular, and somewhat shallow. Albeit a father who eventually relinquishes his authority once both his daughters have a steady boyfriend.
Shrewish Katherina and pure Bianca were transformed into, what the writers believed to be, the modern equivalent of their characters. After all, as her cynical African American literature teacher said, she is an upper-middle class white girl. Her main goals in life seem to be securing a good-looking boyfriend, and being the only sophomore asked to the prom. Bianca gains independence as Kat learns to let her guard down and allow herself to depend on others. Like Kat, he is an outsider in their high school community, he is feared, generally looked down upon, and hated.
He frequently gets in trouble for his antics, as Kat does. While he might not be as mentally unhinged as Petruchio seems to be, he and Kat share the same status of the outcast, which eventually brings them together. She is vocal about her dislike of the patriarchal society she lives in, and yet she is a character in a movie where the men are the ones that eventually get their way. Bianca ends up dating Cameron like he wanted to all along, instead of Joey who she originally wanted.
Kat goes to the prom despite her very vocal dislike of it, because Patrick wanted to take her. She rescues Patrick from detention by flashing his supervisor so he would get the chance to escape. She used her body to create a diversion. She forgives Patrick after finding out that he was paid to take her out after he buys her a guitar, thus letting materialism and the kind of consumer-driven tendencies she has been staunch about claiming to dislike win her over.
Kat is only able to go to Sarah Lawrence at the end of the movie because her father finally allows her to. Kat and Bianca are the only two developed female characters in a movie overwhelmingly populated by men who are scheming to seduce them. They are at the mercy of the whims of the men in their lives, who are involved in seemingly endless plans to satisfy their desires to possess the two sisters by staging scenarios that show them in a favorable light, in a bid to make the sisters fall in love with them.
The fact that one of the only vocally feminist characters in contemporary mainstream pop culture is the shrew highlights the general undesirability of such qualities in young women. Feminism can confer confidence in individuality on those that adhere to its values. It often pushes young women to believe in their strength and intelligence, as opposed to their physical appearance.
It teaches us to subvert gender norms and carve out our own paths, the paths that we desire for ourselves, as opposed to those that society tells us we should attempt to attain. At the beginning of the movie, Kat is very unconventional as a portrayal of an year-old girl in a movie targeted at a young audience. She refuses to be nice because that is what is expected of her. She is staunch about marching to her own drummer. She is one of the few unabashedly intelligent female characters of the late nineties, which is now thought of nostalgically as one of the only time in American TV history that had a number of smart girl heroines.
At around the same time the movie was produced, there were quite a few popular TV shows with strong independent female characters. My So-Called Life , starring Clare Danes as Angela, a 15 year old whose voiceover commentary illustrates great insight into the workings of the life of a teenager. While all the aforementioned girls are intelligent role models, none of them vocally identify as feminists, making Kat the only feminist who admits to being so, and therefore the only one that faces judgment and criticism from her peers for being a feminist.
Kat appears from a new form of feminism popular post the second wave of the movement. Bailey outlines the new kind of feminist that was being embraced by mainstream pop culture of the time, saying:.
Kat is by no means a lipstick feminist, but she comes from a time when feminism lost its teeth and was streamlined and adjusted into a version more acceptable for those that do not want to question how society works and the privileges it affords them. The image of the feminist was more acceptable but less true to its roots. Gone are the days when the word feminist conjured a hairy, angry, bra-less lesbian in the minds of the audience, and yet the resentment that image has bred and the stigma it has fed still remain.
Resentment that is clear in the treatment of Kat throughout the movie. In fact, Kat more closely resembles the Riot Grrrl movement that was gaining popularity in the late nineties, a movement that originated in the same state the movie takes place in. The underground Riot Grrrl movement is exemplified by love of rock music, do-it-yourself projects, political activism, and feminist zines, things that Kat is undoubtedly interested in.
Kat comes from a time when The Beauty Myth was growing stronger and stronger as women gained more and more rights. The Beauty Myth, a phenomenon dubbed so by Naomi Wolf, comes about as a result of the rights women have gained over the years, as the author explains in a book with the same name.
The Beauty Myth is constructed by a patriarchal society struggling to keep women from gaining full equality with men. Wolf argues that if women spend all their time preoccupied with impossible-to-achieve ideals of beauty, they will be too busy to pursue their rights more aggressively and proactively. Bianca is a clear example of the ideals that the Beauty Myth insists upon, and as a result, she is loved for adhering to its demands.
However, Kat, alongside Bianca, Daria, Angela, and Lindsay all uphold the myth in their own ways, as skinny, white, hairless, good-looking girls, they represent the qualities that the myth pushes us to try and achieve.
They are unwittingly complicit in a system that hurts and oppresses women. The movie pokes fun at its origins, and yet uses Shakespeare as a way to attract a wider audience. Shakespeare becomes a marketing tool because of the cultural capital he confers on the movie. Had it not been for that association, the movie would largely go by unnoticed as another typical high school romance. Shakespeare gives the movie a unique following, and, perhaps, a better-informed audience.
The reception of the movie was positive for the most part. The critics of the movie overwhelmingly referred back to Shakespeare as a way to frame their reviews and judge the characters. Several characters were disappointed by what they perceived to be lack of creativity and innovation in the making of the movie.
Everyone would have been offended, but such is the life of the artist. In only a few sentences LaSalle illustrates the biases still present in modern day society, where abuse perpetuated by women is not considered abuse. He suggests that society no longer considers violence against women acceptable, and thus shows us how much the times have changed since Shakespeare.
However, despite the progress, equality and more fluid gender roles are still difficult to come by. The movie was a breakthrough for its young cast, who went on to bigger, more public roles in more successful movies. It still remains a good movie, albeit a somewhat predictable one, that offers, at least initially, interesting, unconventional characters. The movie makes good use of its source and inspiration in constantly poking fun at Shakespeare and not taking itself too seriously.

Kats car is beaten up, old and rusty unlike the popular girls car, which is shiny and new. While the camera shot is panning, we also learn about Kat through music coming from her car, which uses lyrics to describe her style and character. The music is loud, energetic and angry; it uses the lyrics, I dont give a damn about my bad reputation. This taught me that Kat chooses to not be a mainstream type of person and likes to be known as an individual who separates herself from what is known to be the popular thing to do. Kat is interesting here as she both demonstrates and represents her individuality to the audience. Towards the end of the film, the director uses a close-up shot of Kat crying to demonstrate how she changed throughout the film in a positive way.

This is achieved throughout the film successfully. She lives a virtually un-materialistic life compared to her little sister Bianca Larissa Oleynik who lives life as Daddy's little princess and loves it. Only one thing stands in the way of happiness for Bianca; the one rule that stands in her household, 'No dating until they graduate'. For Bianca this is a penalty worse than death but for the once. Some of which depict superficial love, motivation by money and love-at-first-sight. These ideas can be contrasted and compared between the Elizabethan time of Shakespeare's play 'The Taming of the Shrew' and the present contemporary period of teenage movie '10 Thing I Hate About You'. Both have their will compromised; however a difference is found in the severity and process of change between Katherine at the start and the end of each story. Although with both texts being produced in separate decades they still manage to show the same themes and issues. The film "10 things I hate about you" explores the ideas of peer pressure, individualism and trust with the use of setting, camera angles and costumes.
