Each paragraph in the essay requires specific information in order for readers to follow a logical flow of information. Write a paragraph to serve as an introduction for your essay. Begin the introduction with a "hook" that will make readers interested in your essay. The University of Maryland University College recommends using a surprising statement or statistic, quote, personal story or rhetorical question. Avoid the overused and unoriginal dictionary definition opening. After the opener, provide background information on the topic, which should tell readers the purpose of the essay.

An essay is a written composition where you express a specific idea and then support it with facts, statements, analysis and explanations. The basic format for an essay is known as the five paragraph essay — but an essay may have as many paragraphs as needed. A five paragraph essay contains five paragraphs. However, the essay itself consists of three sections: an introduction, a body and a conclusion. When you first start writing essays in school, it's not uncommon to have a topic assigned to you. However, as you progress in grade level, you'll increasingly be given the opportunity to choose the topic of your essays. When selecting a topic for your essay, you'll want to make sure your topic supports the type of paper you're expected to write. If you're expected to produce a paper that is a general overview, then a general topic will suffice. However, if you're expected to write a specific analysis, then you're topic should be fairly specific. For example, lets assume the objective of your essay is to write an overview. However, if the objective or your essay is to write a specific analysis, then "RUSSIA" would be far too general a topic. If you're expected to choose your own topic, then the first step is to define the purpose of your essay.
How Many Paragraphs in an Essay?
There is no firm rule that says an essay needs to have a set number of paragraphs, but an essay must be a minimum of three paragraphs. In its simplest form, an essay can consist of three paragraphs with one paragraph being devoted to each section. In academic work, your paragraphs are likely to be a bit longer than most of the ones you see in this blog post. On average, there are usually to words in a paragraph. Another, less limiting and more accurate way to work out how many paragraphs you need to cover your topic is to look at the main points you have to cover in the body text. A paragraph contains all the ideas that support or explain a single concept. When you are planning your essay, you will think of or research the main elements that are needed in the body text. It would be safe to assume you need at least one paragraph for each of these.
