Each year the Royal Institute holds an essay prize competition. The deadline for submissions is 1 October Advances in IT have made possible things that seemed pure science-fiction even two decades ago, for instance, real-time audio-visual communication is now accessible to anyone almost anywhere. This has transformed commercial and financial transactions, the dissemination of information and news in all media formats, political and personal relationships — even romance. This development is bound to have a radical impact on how we approach traditional philosophical problems about, for example, knowledge, the justification of belief, political power and influence, or fairness. We welcome submissions on these and related topics, addressing questions such as: Does an online world bring new sources of justification, or new forms of scepticism, or both?
Undergraduate Video Contest: "WHY PHILOSOPHY?"
The contest provides high school students interested in philosophy with an opportunity to have their work evaluated and recognized by the largest post-secondary Department of Philosophy in North America. Anyone enrolled in a Canadian high school at or below the grade 12 level or equivalent may participate in the Aristotle Contest. Home-schooled students working at or below the grade 12 level may also participate.
The questions for the contest are:. Contestants will write an essay of words that develops and defends a position taken in response to the chosen question. Essays must be submitted electronically as a Word document in point font, double-spaced and, if using quotations or ideas from the readings or other sources, with complete referencing.
Contestants are not required, encouraged, or expected to do any reading or research beyond reading the chosen question. If contestants choose to use ideas from other sources they will not be penalized for doing so, provided the sources are properly identified. The top ten entries will undergo a plagiarism check. Essays will be judged according to several criteria, including the quality, depth, and originality of thought; the organization of ideas; and clarity of expression. Author names and school affiliations of contestants are redacted so that they remain anonymous to evaluators.
A list of ten finalists is then drawn from papers that were ranked highest by both sets of judges. Evaluators then come to a consensus on the contest winners and recipients of certificates of distinction.
To be eligible, each submission must be emailed as an attached Word document along with a completed contest form PDF.
You can either fill in the PDF electronically using an online PDF-filling tool like PDFescape electronic signatures are acceptable , or you can print the form, fill it out on paper, and scan and attach it to your entry. Submission emails must be dated Monday, June 15, or earlier.
Late entries will not be accepted. Read more about the successful contestants. Any quotations will be considered part of the word count. You may use as many quotations as you wish, keeping in mind that the more you use, the less space you will have for developing your own thoughts. Quotations must, of course, be properly referenced.

The Department of Philosophy awards the Philosophy Matters Prize annually for the best UO undergraduate and graduate student essays that showcase the continued relevance of philosophy to concrete issues facing us in the world. Up to two undergraduate and graduate prizes are awarded each year. Please note that you may submit papers in ANY area of philosophy, with any methodology or approach. Essays may discuss issues that emerge in canonical philosophical texts and in the history of Western and non-Western philosophy.

Essays should be new and unpublished and should be written in English and not exceed 5, words in length. Woolf Information And Questions This prize may be of particular interest to those studying English Literature, History, Politics, Philosophy or Sociology, but we welcome entries from interested students studying any combination of subjects. All sources must be appropriately acknowledged and cited, and a bibliography — including websites consulted — should be attached though excluded from the word count. However, it is to be noted that there are many angles from which to approach each question and those available here are only a limited sample. The aims of this prize are threefold: firstly, to widen interest in philosophy and in studying philosophy at university level among students who would not otherwise be exposed to the subject; secondly, to encourage ambitious and talented secondary school students considering applying to university to study philosophy; and thirdly, to recognize the achievements both of high-calibre students and of those who teach them.
