Many GCSE and A-level subjects are assessed in part by coursework in addition to exams, meaning that the mark you receive for coursework contributes to your overall grade. However, the time you have available for coursework, in contrast with the time constraints of the exam room, can lull some students into a false sense of security. Coursework is arguably just as challenging as exams, just in different ways — and, given the fact that you have more time, much higher standards are expected of you in coursework than in exams. The government has confirmed it will use teacher assessments to provide calculated grades for students this year. The aim is to provide grades to learners before the end of July.
It takes two years to study for GCSE and in some cases, they can be taken early if a teacher feels a student is ready to take them. In general, a student takes between 5 and 12 subjects when they take their GCSE and all students have to study Mathematics, English, and Science until they are years of age, but they are not obliged to take the examination papers.

Students normally begin studying the syllabus at the beginning of Year 10 and take the test at the end of Year Unlike pre GCSE, coursework of any kind is not a compulsory component.
