I teach 7th grade in a "at-risk" Title I school, with a high refugee population, in a city that doesn't value education. My students are primarily second language learners that come to me with little to no background knowledge about the English language and zero writing skills. I constantly have to think of new ways to keep them invested and interested in school.
In my class, I cannot use this book as it was intended, because it is a little dry and students Excellent book and a wonderfully laid out approach to teaching writing. I was disappointed in the lack of writing prompts to supplement the kids on- going writing ideas.
The year-long planner alone is worth the price of the book! I have struggled teaching punctuation to jr high students. We started doing the paragraph editing on a daily basis and believe it or not, my students enjoy this! They have made enough progress that as I read the paragraph they say the mistakes with me! This book is a grade level below what I teach, and now they are asking to move up to the next grade level!
I have not done the paragraphs in order, but have selected what I feel is most interesting to them, or ties in with a lesson from another class. This was money well spent! I'm not a huge fan of workbooks, but in small doses, they can be effective. Writing Fabulous Sentences and Paragraphs is a good example of a helpful workbook. The exercises are brief and provide lots of opportunity for open ended response. My ten year old enjoys using this workbook, too. It is a tad too simplistic for a sixth grader, unless you used it as a base to extend from.
But it gives some good writing topics and frameworks for organizing your thoughts prewriting. Used as part of a larger language art curriculum, this book is a good resource. I love the resource. I read this book cover to cover. I wish I had it a few years ago when I was first trying to help my kids with essays. I would look at their papers and be overwhelmed, with no idea where to begin.
The author talks about organizing ideas into some sort of web before beginning the writing process. She also shows a rubric regarding how essays are graded. There are so many ideas here There are some great ideas for intros and conclusions. Many examples of student work are included some of which are quite funny.
