The reason I like the book is because it has not only the good essays, but also the comments from the admission office. There are a lot of essays in the book talks about the Asian immigrants, even I am not an Asian immigrant, I am an international student, and I believe this book can definitely help me with college essay writing.

The colleges know the applicants from their essays, and all the essays have different writing styles to represent themselves. I remember when my mom picked up this book, The reason I like the book is because it has not only the good essays, but also the comments from the admission office. I remember when my mom picked up this book, she thought that all the application essay start with "My name is XXXX and I live in XXXX" format certainly she didn't go through the American college application process.

In fact, I did not find any essay in the book that start the same way. When we are presenting ourselves to the colleges, we want to be unique, special, not as same as every body else. Everyone in the world is a unique individual, by showing the colleges the unique and special personality and experience, everyone can get into a college that fits the best.

We are presented here, not quite with a guidance book, but with a small sociological study, upon which we can reflect about societal acceptance trends and behavior of those, applying for the most known among the Big Six.

Basically the kids that have the best shot have the same quirks as everyone else but can reveal their idiosyncrasies eloquently through a story without getting caught up in their own accomplishments.

Dec 30, Brandon Lu rated it really liked it. This was a good book. The author showed various essays from accepted Harvard applicants, and gave critiques on how the essay was written. Some of the essays were very interesting, humorous, and emotional. I thought every single essay was perfect, but each always had a flaw of some sort. I think that reading this book will help one improve their writing and keep readers hooked.

Great book overall. The best part of this book is the advice on what should be included and what must be avoided in your personal statement. This advice is applied consistently to judge one essay after another. By the end of the book if you have not absorbed or heeded the advice but get accepted to your dream school anyway, I would love to read your essay.

I love counter-examples! Apr 03, Simon rated it it was amazing. Borrowed this book for my little sister who is applying to college. A surprisingly good read. Nov 27, Sylvia Vukosavljevic added it. This is one of my favorite guidebooks to writing a successful admissions essay for Harvard or any other school really. What I enjoy about this book is that the authors offer up the profiles of each student creating a kind of guide for future students to understand what stand out factors, GPA, and overall profile helped students profiled in the book to get in.

Over the winter break, I read this book about Harvard admissions essays recommended by my Korean college counselor. Out of curiosity for how seniors write their essays for college, I decided to read this collection of essays written by the students from the most prestigious university in the United States.

First, I realized that it takes a long time to write an admissions essay. Originally, I had thought it would be similar to my prior experience of writing essays in school; however, the introdu Over the winter break, I read this book about Harvard admissions essays recommended by my Korean college counselor. Since I had already written my personal narrative for my summative English assignment, I thought that I could apply this experience to writing college applications.

Therefore, I decided to accumulate precious episodes in my mind from now on for my college essay. Second, I noticed that there is no specific content required. Before reading this book, I assumed that Harvard would give a specific topic that tells me what subject material I have to write.

However, the authors focused on different times of their lives including when they were very little or attending high school. Third, I understood how important it was to write with concise. This reiterated what my English and geometry teachers had mentioned about writing with impact.

I could see that what they had been emphasizing was something significant to my future life. Hence, I made a resolution to always be precise and inspirational in order to successfully enroll in college. I learned these three important lessons for writing an essay to enter college. In general, I found out that I am currently learning step by step in school how to be victorious in my future. In conclusion, I made a resolution to do my best in school to prepare me for a better future.

Most of all, I sincerely thank my Korean college counselor who suggested this book to me as well as my English and Geometry teachers who gave me a brief image of college admissions. Shelves: enjoyable-read , informative.

I am a member of a library and this is a book I picked up casually. That alone sh I am a member of a library and this is a book I picked up casually. Reading the essays will make one realize, that most students have spoken of something very personal and not something general. Reading the analysis will make one know what someone else in this case a Harvard Crimson representative thinks about that essay. And that is important. But to be selected into a reputed college one has to be original and not do something that someone else has already done.

So it is fair to take ideas and then work on them. That is the important part. That is the point one needs to keep in mind. Sep 07, Liz rated it it was ok Shelves: read-for-school.
