The many differences throughout the poem and movie include character names, battles, and the way the heroes die. The most obvious difference between the two is the name of the heroes and their battling strengths. In the poem, Beowulf, the hero is known as Beowulf and has extraordinary strength whereas in the movie, The 13th Warrior, he is known as Buliwyf who has nothing other than regular human strength.
Another difference occurs in the in how the beasts are portrayed. In the poem the main beasts name is Grendel, and in the movie the beast is known as the leader of thousands of other beasts. Buliwyf and Beowulf serve under the same king, Hygelac, and both come for the purpose of helping the king danes and his people by slaying the beasts.
Characteristics of the beasts having animal like features remain the same in both the movie and the poem. Where the beasts reside, in an underwater cave, is also the same. Both the beasts in the movie and poem take their kills head as a token of the battle. At the end of the poem and the movie both of the heroes die though in different ways. Beowulf dies as an old man after getting slashed in the throat by a dragon and in contrast Buliwyf dies from being poisoned.
Both heroes bodies are burned, just as they requested, after death. The differences and similarities shown in The 13 th Warrior and Beowulf can be examined through the plot, central idea, and the characters. The plot of the epic poem Beowulf and the film The 13 th Warrior differ greatly compared to each other. In Beowulf the main character, Beowulf set sail to the Danes land in order to defeat a monster named Grendel. In the film, the character that represents Beowulf, Buliwuf, sets out to defeat a race, not a single monster and its mother, the race of Wendols. The character defeats Grendel in the poem; but he does not defeat all of the Wendols in the film on the first attack.

I have read the story Beowulf and watched the movie The 13th Warrior. I have closely compared the similarities and differences between the two. Beowulf and The 13th Warrior have vast differences and even more similarities between the two stories. In each of them I have found that both have Beowulf and Buliwyf are going into battle, they both have to fight a monstrous cannibal being that attacks a village, and in the end both characters die in honor. But, each had its differences. For instance in Beowulf, you can find Christian interpolations, and before they go into battle with the monster they have to face they drink and party before the fight. Now, in The 13th Warrior, you will find Muslim interpolations, and before they fight they lay in a circle with their weapons waiting for the fight with the group of people they have to face. The 13th Warrior they travel far into the north to help king Hrothgar and his people fight the Wendel Tribe. In The 13th Warrior when they are waiting for the monster to show, they lay in a circle with their weapons waiting for it to show up and fight. When Beowulf fights Grendel, him and his men party and drink that night before the fight and fall asleep. The Northmen use their weapons while Beowulf used only his hands.
