With the schools closed and with us all spending more time at home, it's more important than ever that we keep moving and stay healthy and positive. During the school closure, Techniquest are showcasing daily science demos where viewers are encouraged to get hands on and bring science to life from the comfort of their own homes. We could not believe the shocking things that we learned in our Literacy text map. We are now applying what we have learned to write an eye-witness report. We have planned our own text maps, in readiness for our writing next time. During our afternoons, we have been busy preparing for our Eisteddfod competitions. We have been looking at a Welsh artist called Martyn Evans and analysed his work to find out what style he uses.
We are using this analysis to help us create our own art work using buildings that we associate with Cardiff and Wales. What an exciting week! We have made our Christmas Cracker using our design. In maths, we have enjoyed building our confidence with division and calculating fractions of amounts. We have also been fundraising for Children In Need this week. We have been busy participating in Joe Wicks workouts and practising our Dance Monkey song for the talent show.
We can't wait to find out how much we have raised. This week children have investigating Victorian criminals! We started by discovering about John Walker who was caught stealing onions The children have been busy investigating the evidence and drawing their own conclusions.
They have planned their own persuasive speech to convince the judge of their opinion. In their maths lesson, they have used ICT to conduct searches through a database of other Victorian criminals to find out what types of crimes were commited and what types of punishment people had. I wonder what punishment John Walker will get if the judge finds him guilty!
Children were horrified to find out this week that Christmas Crackers might be banned, following a news article from the Metro that was spotted. The children understood that crackers were bad for the environment so instead got straight to work in researching, planning and designing new, exciting environmentally friendly crakers which they can sell at the Christmas Fayre.
Children have used Pic Collage to research designs, analysed results pie charts, bar graphs from the audience questionnaire and planned their final design, in keeping with the design brief and audience feedback. Children have been developing their digital skills this week. When publishing our Queen Victoria biographies, we have been practising using hyperlinks on our PowerPoint presentations and citing our sources to give credit.
We have also been busy solving a range of maths mysteries to solve problems. We really enjoyed applying our place value skills we have been practising this half term. What a great class assembly. Thanks to your support, we raised nearly pounds which we can put towards more resources and equipment.
Another busy week! In our digital learning, we have planned, created, tested and evaluated our own online quizzes, with pictures and videos using Kahoot to test each other on their knowledge of Queen Victoria. In our Maths learning, we have become confident using the terms multiple, factor and prime number and have begun identifying them. What a busy week! On Monday, we enjoyed our visit to the Big Pit for our Servents of the Empire workshop and underground visit. We loved getting messy with the coal, being strong by acting out pulling the coal and being brave when the lights went out underground.
This week in class we have continued to explore the story of Street Child. This lead us to disovering what life was like in Victorian workhouses. In Literacy, we have begun looking at what makes an effective setting description and have started to gather our ideas to plan our own one about workhouses.
In Maths, we have developed our abilitty to use a written method for addition some of us with decimals. We have also considered how we could use our previous knowledge of rounding to estimate our addition calculations.
During our Mission time, we have started comparing Victorian jobs which will help us for our trip the Big Pit on Monday 30th. This week in class we have eveloped our understanding of rounding, including rounding to the nearest 10, and some of us also looked at rounding decimals. We have continued to read our Street Child book where we have been undertaking character studies through writing in the role of Jim Jarvis, Venn Diagram comparison and using P.
E Point, Evidence, Explain to prove our thoughts. In Science, we have been finding out about microbes and where we might find them. We have made our own models of different microbes to demonstate what they look like under the microscope. This week in class we have written an acrostic poem for our Harvest celebrations and looked at what makes strong passwords. In Maths, we have looked at place value in numbers up to ,, including comparing, ordering and rounding.
We have used the front cover to make inferences and read Chapter 1 to collect character information. We have been very impressed by the standard of this year's applicants. Well done, all. This week in class we have established our school rules, written a Harvest prayer to show what we are thankful for and completed a number of Inspirational Maths challenges and activities.
