An 80, word thesis would take 9 hours to present; how about in just 3 minutes with the aid of a single slide? We are inviting DPhil students to do just that. The 3 Minute Thesis competition challenges doctoral candidates to present a compelling spoken presentation on their research topic and its significance in just three minutes to a non-specialist audience. The competition will help you to develop your communication skills, vital to raise awareness of your work, seek support and obtain funding.
You will be able to develop ways of explaining complex ideas in a way that is accessible and engaging for a non-specialist audience, raise the profile of your work, enhance your CV, and network with like-minded researchers. Video of Promoting yourself with 3MT.
Oxford will run a two-stage competition, first the heat to select four finalists. Next the final to find the overall winner. The winner of the Oxford final will be entered into the national semi-finals, and if they are successful they will go on to the national final in Birmingham, with their expenses paid to attend. National 3-MINUTE Thesis Competition
The 3 Minute Thesis 3MT competition requires doctoral researchers to compete to deliver the best research presentation in just 3 minutes and one slide. It is based on a concept developed by the University of Queensland which quickly spread across Australia and New Zealand, and has gone global. Graduates are not eligible. UCalgary Three Minute Thesis Competition
The 3MT helps graduate students develop skills in translating their research and its impact for non-specialists. The University of Calgary 3MT takes place each year during the winter term. Registration opens in February, with heats taking place in March and finals in April. The 3MT competition helped me learn to focus on the significance of my work: What makes it important? Alongside nine other students selected from 22 preliminary round competitors, Yesudasan had to present his dissertation research in just three minutes to a panel of non-specialist judges, staff and students from across campus. Presentations were judged on their comprehension, clarity, engagement and communication style.
